HST filing and the New Housing Rebate, handled
We file your GST/HST returns and your payroll and WSIB remittances on schedule, and we help new-home buyers and builders claim the GST/HST New Housing Rebate they're entitled to.
GST/HST, payroll and WSIB remittances
Monthly, quarterly or annual, whatever the CRA has assigned you.
- GST/HST returns prepared from your books and filed on time
- Input tax credits claimed on business purchases, so you only remit what you owe
- Payroll source deductions remitted to the CRA
- WSIB premiums reported and paid [if registered]
- Late or missed HST returns filed and reconciled
- CRA HST reviews and letters answered
Do I need to register for HST?
Two big exceptions:
- Uber, Lyft and other rideshare drivers must register from their first fare, no matter how little they earn. See rideshare driver taxes.
- Taxi and limousine drivers follow the same rule.
Not sure if you should be registered? It's one of the most common questions on our free call.
The GST/HST New Housing Rebate
If you bought a newly built home, or built or substantially renovated one, part of the HST you paid can come back to you. In Ontario there's a federal portion and an Ontario portion. Builders often claim it for buyers at closing, but not always, and not always the full amount.
Who it can apply to:
- Buyers of a new home from a builder, to live in as a primary residence
- Owner-builders who built or substantially renovated their own home
- Landlords who bought or built new residential rental property (a separate rental rebate)
What we do:
Check your purchase agreement and closing documents to see whether the builder already claimed it.
Confirm which rebates you qualify for and the amount.
Prepare and file the application with the CRA and answer any follow-up.
Applications have time limits, usually two years from the key date (closing or completion), so it's worth checking now.
HST mistakes we fix most often
Not registering when you should have.
Passing the $30,000 threshold, or driving rideshare from day one, without registering. You still owe the tax, but registering and filing late is far better than waiting for the CRA to find you.
Missing input tax credits.
Many small businesses remit the HST they charge but never claim back the HST they paid on fuel, equipment, rent and supplies. That's money left with the CRA.
Filing returns that don't match your books.
HST returns filed from bank deposits instead of reconciled books often overstate or understate what's owed. We reconcile first, then file.
Charging HST on exempt services, or not charging it on taxable ones.
Common in healthcare and mixed businesses. We check what you sell and set it up correctly.
Key dates
| What | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Monthly / quarterly HST filers | One month after the period ends |
| Annual HST filers (most individuals in business) | June 15; payment due April 30 |
| New Housing Rebate | Generally within 2 years of closing or completion |

My builder said the rebate was included. Should I still check?
Yes. Check your statement of adjustments; it's quick, and sometimes only part of what's available was claimed.
I bought a new condo to rent out. Is there a rebate?
There's a separate New Residential Rental Property Rebate. We'll check whether you qualify.
I'm behind on HST returns. What happens?
Penalties and interest build up. We'll file the missing periods from your books, or rebuild the books first if needed.
Do I charge HST on my services?
It depends on what you sell. Most health services, for example, are exempt; massage therapy isn't. We'll confirm on the free call.
Can you register my business for HST?
Yes, along with your payroll and WSIB accounts.
Is WSIB mandatory for me?
It depends on your industry and whether you have employees. We'll tell you and register you if needed.
