Uber and rideshare driver taxes, sorted
HST registration, quarterly or annual HST returns, vehicle expenses and your tax return, done for you. Already behind? We file the past years too.
The rule most drivers miss
That's because the CRA treats ridesharing as a taxi business. Uber collects HST on your fares and remits it on your behalf where you've given it your HST number, and you claim back the HST you pay on your car costs. If you're not registered, you can't claim those credits, and the CRA can still assess you for the tax.
Rideshare vs food delivery
| Item | Rideshare (passengers) | Food delivery only (Uber Eats, DoorDash, SkipTheDishes) |
|---|---|---|
| Register for HST | From the first fare | Only once over $30,000 in four quarters |
| Report income as | Self-employed business income (T2125) | Self-employed business income (T2125) |
| Vehicle expenses | Business-use share | Business-use share |
Doing both? Then the rideshare rule applies, and we'll split your income correctly.
What you can claim
Your share of business use for:
- Gas and charging
- Insurance, including rideshare coverage
- Maintenance, repairs, tires and car washes
- Car payments: capital cost allowance if you own the car, lease payments if you lease
- Licence and registration
- Phone and data plan
- Parking and tolls (not tickets)
- Uber and app service fees
- Water, mints and car supplies for passengers
You'll need a mileage log to prove the business share. The app's trip data helps, but it doesn't count the kilometres between rides. We'll show you a simple way to track them.
Behind on HST?
Most drivers we meet registered late or never filed an HST return. It's fixable. We get you registered, rebuild each period from your Uber tax summaries, claim the credits you're owed, and file everything together. The sooner it's done, the less interest there is.
How it works
Step 1: Free call.
Tell us how long you've driven and what's been filed.
Step 2: Send your app summaries.
Uber and Lyft provide annual tax summaries; we'll tell you where to download them.
Step 3: We do the numbers.
Income, HST, vehicle expenses, mileage share.
Step 4: We file.
HST returns and your personal tax return, current and past years.

I only drive part-time. Do I still need an HST number?
Yes. For rideshare, the threshold doesn't apply, however little you earn.
I've been driving for years without registering. Am I in trouble?
You owe the HST, but you're also owed credits on your car costs, and filing stops penalties and interest from growing. We'll show you where you stand.
Can I claim my whole car payment?
Only the business-use share, and car-ownership costs have limits. We work it out from your mileage log.
Does Uber's tax summary cover everything?
It shows gross fares, fees and HST collected. It doesn't include your car expenses or personal-use kilometres; that's where we come in.
I also have a full-time job. Does that change anything?
Your job and your driving go on the same return. We make sure the right amount is withheld so there's no surprise.
Can you talk to me in Tamil?
[confirm].
